In the past few years, intelligent lighting is mostly thunder and rain, and it is not really popular. However, in 2017, with the diversification of products, the continuous improvement of technology, the maturity of the industrial chain ecosystem and the active promotion of manufacturers, the global intelligent lighting market has entered a stage of rapid development. According to data from the LED Research Center (LEDinside), the global smart lighting market in 2017 was close to $4.6 billion, with an annual growth rate of 95%, and is expected to reach $13.4 billion in 2020.

At present, the global smart lighting market still needs to rely on the continuous expansion of public infrastructure, which is the smart city construction. Due to the support of the government, the world's major cities are fully promoting the smart city plan, and the pace of construction is expected to continue to accelerate, therefore, the application of intelligent lighting in the public domain will be prioritized.

With the government taking the lead in promoting smart lighting, the social acceptance has increased. Intelligent lighting has the advantages of energy saving, convenience, and easy control, and the rise of the Internet of Things also makes it necessary for enterprises to introduce networked lighting, so the demand for intelligent lighting is growing rapidly in the commercial and industrial lighting market. According to LEDinside, industrial and commercial lighting accounted for 60% of the global smart lighting market in 2017. Under the digital development, intelligent lighting will bring more new business models and value enhancement to these two areas.

In contrast, although the actual use of smart lighting is still a small number of families, but with the improvement of consumer living standards, driven by relevant policies (such as smart city extension policies) and the promotion of manufacturers, the application of smart home lighting will gradually spread. LEDinside estimates that residential lighting accounted for 23% of the global smart lighting market in 2017 and will increase to 31% in 2020. In the next few years, smart lighting and smart home development, will become the fastest growing application field.

In recent years, global lighting manufacturers have adopted different strategies to accelerate transformation and upgrading, and have successively given up low-profit general lighting, and turned to intelligent lighting with higher profits and better prospects. At present, the more rapid development of manufacturers include Philips Lighting, OSRAM, Cree, GE, LEDVANCE, LIFX, Acuity Brands and so on. Chinese manufacturer Opal Lighting through product development and cross-border cooperation (such as the cooperation with Huawei to launch smart home product suite), has realized the interconnection between lighting products and intelligent terminal remote control; Feile Audio, Zhou Ming technology, etc., vigorously promote smart street lights, and currently mainly undertake related projects of the Chinese government. Taiwan manufacturer Liton Technology announced in August 2017 to join the Stanford Digital City Alliance program, currently in addition to street lights, but also to develop intelligent surveillance solutions and use of cameras and communication modules.
